Loktak Lake & Keibul Lamjao National Park

Loktak Lake-

It in Bishnupur District which is 48kms from Imphal City and it is the largest fresh water lake in the North–East India. It is a beautiful stretch of water resembling a miniature inland sea. A day spent at Loktak Lake is a lifetime of memory. Visitors can catch a bird’s eye view of the lake from Sendra. Fishermen living in floating islands called Phumdis in floating huts known as Phumsangs are unique sights of this lake. The Sendra Tourist Home with an attached Cafeteria is a sought after tourist spot. Boating and other water sports are organised here at Takmu Water Sports Complex.

 

Keibul Lamjao National Park-

The only floating National Park in the world, the Keibul Lamjao National Park located on the Loktak Lake is the last natural habitat of the “Sangai”(Rucervus eldii eldii), the dancing deer of Manipur. A glimpse of the deer in this unique wetland ecosystem is a must for any wildlife enthusiast. Other wildlife to be seen include: Hog Deer, Otter, a host of waterfowls and migratory birds, the latter usually sighted during November to March. The Forest Department of Manipur maintains watch towers and two rest houses within the park.

Wildlife in KLNP-

Some very rare animals may be encountered in and around this wilderness. The star attraction, of course, is the brow-antlered deer Cervus eldi eldi, called Sangai in the local Meitei dialect. Other species of deer seen here include the hog deer, sambar and muntjacThe Rhesus monkey is found ubiquitously around the park.

A variety of rare birds occur in Keibul Lamjao and the Loktak Lake. The Hooded Crane may be seen in the Manipur valley. The Black Eagle and the Shaheen Falcon are some of the raptors seen here. The Eastern Shite Stork, Bamboo Partridge and Green Peafowl are also found here.

Some of the species of hornbills found here include the Brownbacked Hornbill, Rufus necked Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill, the Pied Hornbill and the Great Pied Hornbill.

INA Memorial at Moirang:

 

This town in Bishnupur District of Moirang has a special place in the history of India’s Freedom Struggle. It was at Moirang that the flag of the Indian National Army was first unfurled on April 14, 1944. The INA Museum which has a collection of letters, photographs, badges of ranks and other war memorabilia reminds the visitors of the noble sacrifices made by the INA soldiers under the charismatic leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

 

 

Transport

By Air: Manipur’s capital, Imphal (48 km. from the park) is connected by flight to major cities like Delhi (2,503 km.), Guwahati (469 km.), Calcutta (1,620 km.). 

 

By Rail: Dimapur (215 km. from Imphal) is the nearest railhead. Jiribam, a small town on Manipur’s border, 225 km. from Imphal is an alternative, from where one can proceed to Keibul Lamjao by road.

 

By Road: Imphal is connected by road with Guwahati (469 km.) through National Highway No.39 and Silchar through National Highway No. 53. The park is about 48 km. from Manipur’s capital, Imphal and can be approached by bus or on private vehicles.
